Firstly, if it is strong enough, a company can apply for brand protection on google, and although this takes time, will help. 
Secondly, I don't really understand your second part, as how would "bidding on brand" get my competitors above my natural placement? Unless you are referring to that paid position 1-3 are above natural, but your sentence is not ver clear. 

Overall though, I do agree. A company should do ppc on their own brand (even if brand protected). I read a study a short time ago comparing the traffic (and more importantly the conversion) levels/rates with and without ppc, and with ppc came out on tops.

Now, when it comes to affiliates being permitted to brand bid......now this is where it gets interesting :0</description>
